Remember Me Podcast Transcription

Transcription des podcasts de Remember Me

This is a transcription of one the 3 Remember Me podcasts which were released a short time before the film. They’re really great conversations between Nick Osbourne, the producer, Will Fetters, the writer, Allen Coulter, director and Robert Pattinson and give a lot of insight on the film.
They can be downloaded as MP3 files for free on itunes. This is podcast #2, which mainly discusses the character of Tyler.

Allen (talking to Will)- Well, er.. what about the… you wrote the characters, so what... tell us a little bit about the germination…

Will – Well, as I’ve said… Tyler’s self-defeating behaviours, nihilistic tendencies, all too familiar… you know…

Did you just say nihilistic?

(Will)...take it through the full process of what would be some pretty late nights and pretty dark places, but…ultimately you know, he was not me, he was an embodiment of a lot of the feelings I was feeling at that time I’ve talked before about like, he’s on that tipping point of his life, adolescent rage and teenage angst, kind of morphing into this adult desillusion and the movie to me, the story ultimately all.. y’know, love is the central theme, Tyler kind of waking up and.. kind of coming to be … we get the sense by the end of the film that Tyler has started to turn towards a … you know, a life of connection to the world…

(Will) and Ruby.. Caroline’s character obviously being the connecting point where we first meet him but…to me, that was kind of where it all started and..

(Will)...Rob, you and I have talked about that before, I’ve heard you talk about it… there is a time when - you’ve said it better than anyone…when you started to learn to trust your own feelings, when you were at this age and you had all this emotion, and like you’ve talked about to Allen, the young love, …and you have all these hormones… and you’ve got all this uncertainty and all this anger and.. and ultimately, a lot of us kind of…the people we ultimately grow up to become… are kind of formed in that fire of the early twenties .. it’s especially true for me as a man… and that was where it all started… Rob, I know you and I talked about kind of connecting to that and Tyler…

Rob – Definitely, I think.. I don’t know if he became, er.. changed into a disillusioned man…(he laughs)… in the film, an angsty teenager turning into a disillusioned adult…

Allen – No, we tried to avoid that.
Allen – Non, nous avons essayé d’éviter ça.

Rob – Ah OK!
Rob – Ah bon OK !

Will – That’s what I was saying, if he doesn’t meet Ally, if he doesn’t shift, then you end up in an ugly place.

Rob – Yeah, yeah, true. I mean… I think he kind of... I mean, I’ve always liked the idea that he kind of felt that his emotions were kind of.. fraudulent at the time...
Rob – Oui, oui, exact.

(Rob) He can’t keep playing on this existential teenage thing forever…but at the same time, if you feel that there’s no clear route to go on to next, like, er.. it’s very scary… it’s difficult… er…And also I found that quite interesting that when someone finds that all their emotions are fake, it’s a quite interesting job to play as an actor…I mean.. if they think that everything they’re doing is a lie…what’s the point in doing it…it’s the complete opposite of what you’re supposed to be doing as an actor, so…

Allen – Ah, its interesting too, I mean it’s a.. I think that.. I think that comes across in different ways, because while you perceive it that way, I.. you know I don’t know what you’re thinking, so I’m seeing it as something else but the important thing is that what comes across is a very truthful rendition… of those feelings of that guy… which leads to certain scenes that are seen after the confrontation with Chris Cooper’s character…

(Allen)...when he (Tyler ) is left alone in the room…you see his feelings of frustration, because he’s never able to put his foot in the right place...

Rob – mmmh, yeah.
Rob – Mmmh, c’est vrai.

Allen – He never says the right thing, he always says the wrong thing, in fact, and he knows it, which has to do with that … that he doesn’t know how to be a complete human being… because he’s too young.. he’s learning who he is in the process of this film, learning to be authentic…

Rob - Mmh- mmh… That’s the thing I … That’s what I quite liked in the script as well, there’s nothing tangible he actually gains or learns or anything, you know, ..it’s just… it’s just a kind of acceptance… he’s just young! like that’s, I mean, that’s…
Rob - Mmh- mmh…

Allen – But acceptance is a big… is a huge part of the movie, I think… (Rob: yeah, yeah yeah) that’s what.. you see…one of the reasons I was adamant about ending the movie the way we did, with Ally… er.. and the look on her face was because it’s… to me, that’s a look of acceptance (Rob - Mmh- mmh) ...of knowingness, of maturity. In a way, she completes the journey that she begins at the beginning, as a young girl, and it is about that, that’s actually the word I would use – acceptance… you know…. Not a lesson! Not a lesson. I wouldn’t make a film that.. I mean, I would run from a film that I thought taught a lesson (Rob laughs).

(Rob rit).

Nick – There was a thing in your twenties – especially your early twenties – you think you have – I think as you grow old you realize you have less and less control of your life - (Rob - Mmh- mmh) and I think what Tyler is struggling with is the fact he hasn’t had control over his life for a while… he couldn’t .. his brother committed suicide... there’s a certain level of.. you know… shit happens.

Nick – You know…

Allen - Well, that’s a nice moment too – with… well I don’t know.. well this is going to be…this is going to be on fairly soon… (someone says « yeah »). OK. But there are moments so, when Tyler… you know, this is a moment of acceptance … when he’s in his father’s office at a certain point (Rob - Mmh- mmh)… and he… and you just sense that he’s sort of … he feels… released… from his battles, in a way (Rob - Mmh-mmh)… he feels, you know, he seems to be … you said it, he’s sort of calm and accepting (Rob - Mmh- mmh), in a way.. and that’s a really nice, tender moment which you did beautifully… and which is, er… you just…but it’s not a solution. (Rob : Yeah). I mean, it’s not like, you know.. this bold face, here it is, ah, here’s the.. here’s the punch line, here’s the log line, the meaning of the movie…that ties up everything neatly.

Will – Yeah… it can’t be. I think it’s fine, I don’t want to get too specific, I haven’t seen the the movie, but.. that look on his face you’re talking about, that moment… and we get that too.. in the subway with Emily…Ally, because ultimately she’s our guide, kind of…I think in much of the story … Tyler’s Ally emotionnally takes us .. falls in a similar trajectory.

  1. Thanks so much for going to all the trouble of transcribing this! It is very interesting and I never saw it before.
It's interesting, but those two photos at the end of the piece, and that stuff about acceptance, the juxtaposition of Tyler's face and Ally's, all that, I was just coming to that conclusion from another place. Only I called it 'serenity', not acceptance.
It's so interesting knowing what the filmmakers had in mind.

  3. hi @jessegirl thanks for your comment! Mmh I don't know about serenity. I haven't been through such terrible losses as Tyler and Ally - and you - have, so I don't know about finding serenity after such events. Can you really ever be serene after this? You know that better than me. Acceptance seems to me a better choice of word, although it is less optimistic. This is a serious question. Is the ending of the film - when we see Ally - heartwarming? I think it is not. There is still so much grief and sadness here. I still don't know what to think.

  5. No, the end of the film is not heartwarming. It is bitter sweet. Heartwarming seems almost a trite way to describe it. This question of acceptance and serenity is diffictult. To me, acceptance is hard, hard, hard. Serenity is always defined by peace but can peace be had without acceptance? Serenity then being a sort of resigned calm, still sad but loving? I honestly don't know.

  6. jessegirl _ I don't know either. The more I think of the ending, of how Ally and Tyler's friends and family must continue, about how they feel, the more I think it's been kind of "softened" to make Tyler's fate less unbearable to us. I mean, people in the theaters were still sobbing even after seeings Ally'slovely smile. It helps to know time has passed and that she and all of them will go on, but, but... and I know Rob thinks it's a heartwarming/heartbreaking film, but we don't really know what he thinks of the life of the survivors. I wish he would say in the DVD commentary. I can't imagine serenity. Even acceptance... resignation maybe?

  7. The first time I saw the film the final montage seemed too soon to me. I said that on another blog right after I'd come back from it. It is an artistic, dramatic ending. You can't just stop with 9/11,and they knew that.
The thing is, even if time is supposed to have passed for the characters, it hasn't for the audience; the audience is in full numb, grieving mode, full throttle. The audience is so far from Ally's smile, from Caroline's moving on, and so on.
But when you see it multiple times, the ending grows on you and seems right somehow.

  8. jessegirl - you've nailed it as always. Time has passed on for the characters, but not for the viewers. We have no time to grieve, not even to fully grasp what happened and we're still stunned when we see Ally smile and the train departing. A beautiful ending, if you loke, an artistic one, but not one we can accept in the short timeframe we have in the theater. This is why so many viewers (I think) stayed frozen in their seats a good while after the credits started rolling.

  9. Rum, I think the audience stayed also to hear the music. Zarvos' end piece isn't over with Ally's smile; it is the requiem that continues and we feel compelled to listen. I think, actually, that the music, unlike the visuals, keeps the sombre tone, then soars when that piano pounds in--Ally's smile--soars, and you just can not get out of your seat until the requiem is over. It's as if you have to stay until the angels have carried Tyler away. It doesn't feel right to go. You are struck by the tragedy, but you are travelling with Tyler as far as you can possibly go. Then you are honouring the dead. And then you stand up.
Your actions might alter when you are with others, that friend who isn’t as touched as you are, the husband who needs to go to the can. And if the rest of the audience shuffles past you and disturbs you, the spell is broken. And you wonder why these others around you must disturb the heart of the film.

  10. @jessegirl - I love your description of the music at the ending - it's beautiful. I've been thinking of writing something about it but somehow I can't - I think I need some visuals to be able to do that. Hum...let's make a new post about the score? :))
